PocketStreets Map, and traditional  maps

Microsoft PocketStreets, AutoRoute and Streets&Trips

For those of us who have to have toys and a PDA is amongst them then this is for you. You will need a copy of Microsoft Autoroute, from which you can install Pocket Streets onto your PDA.

1. Download these PocketStreets maps which cover Tuscan Ridge to Orlando by right clicking here and select "save as".  Click here to get one that covers Tuscan Ridge to Tampa. The mps files are about about 1.5Mb each

2, Copy the maps to your PDA,

3. Start Pocketstreets

3. Load  the map.

You should now have street level mapping, along with restaurants and shopping malls for the entire area between Tuscan Ridge and Orlando. You can do searches for addresses and/or restaurants which is dead useful when you get an address like 6501 International Drive. It's a long road and this will pin point it for you.

If your gadget collections includes a GPS receiver then PocketStreets can use it to overlay your position on the map. You can't do route planning but at least you know where you are.

You can get the UK version of AutoRoute for under £25 which will give you roadmaps for Europe, and the ability to install PocketStreets onto your PDA. Once you have done this you can use these Tuscan Ridge to Orlando or Tuscan Ridge to Tampa maps

I purchased a copy of MS Streets and Trips at Walmart while over recently which cost me the grand sum of $29. It was this I used to create the map you can download from the link above. But of course Streets and Trips covers the entire US.

Microsoft have made a whole bunch of PocketStreets maps available for free download from their  PocketStreets website.

Alternative PocketStreets

While trying to figure out how to get some US mapping onto my PDA ready for my impending trip my web searches unearthed this possible gem below.  It's nothing to do with me, I haven't tried it, so don't know how useful it is. But if you want to play then give it a try I say. Personally I would, in fact I did pay the small amount of money to purchase Autoroute then you can use all the free maps from Microsoft which are in 2005 format.

PSConvert

Convert Pocket Streets 2002, 2003 and 2004 maps into Pocket Streets 2001 format.

How to get Pocket Streets and lots of maps on your Pocket PC for free:

  • Download Pocket Streets 2001 from here - it's a setup program, just run it.
  • Download free maps from Microsoft.
  • Run PSConvert.exe on your desktop machine and convert the maps you downloaded.  Note that you can select multiple files to convert at once.  Use the file menu to select a map.
  • Copy the maps to your Pocket PC with Explorer and ActiveSync.
  • NOTE:  Address search does not work. You can search for places. A trick is to use the place search to search for the street name you are looking for since it searches the addresses of places too (e.g. searching for "Denny" turns up many stores on Denny Way in Seattle).
  • Does not work with Streets 2005 maps.
